About Heather

Hello! I’m Heather Sutherland, an empathetic, interactive digital & print designer based in Portland, Oregon. I enjoy UX/UI, page layout, branding, poster design, typography, and copywriting, and I am always adding to my bag of tricks. I like to say that I began as a “seat of the pants” designer, as in flying by the seat of my pants, running Photoshop with no clue what half the buttons did, and designing (printed) case statement booklets for my non-profit job in Google Slides. After determining that I actually really liked design, I got a BFA from Portland State University and can now proudly say I know what half the buttons do in Photoshop.

My approach to design is human-centered and goal-focused. My mission is to create work that breaks down barriers and resonates with users no matter their background or situation. I am a passionate advocate for accessibility in design. I have a degree in psychology as well as eight years’ experience working in the adaptive sport world. These perspectives help me to create effective, impactful design that reaches people where they are.

I’m a firm believer that no one can pour from an empty cup, so I do my best to balance work and play. On my days off I enjoy reading, going on hikes with friends, riding horses, and teaching myself leatherworking.
